Triskaidekaphobia comes from the Ancient Greek word τρισκαιδεκα (triskaideka) meaning thirteen and the word φοβος (phobos) meaning fear, panic, terror, first used as a suffix to denote fear of something in 1786. Specific fears of the number or quantity 13 are not quite as old, but the word to denote that fear- triskaidekaphobia-is only a century old, coined by American doctor Isador Henry Coriat around 1910. ![]() Examples of superstition, here specifically to mean irrational fears of beliefs, have been documented for the last 5,000 years. ![]() Fear and superstition has been a part of culture for as long as people could count.
